This new residence is designed to respect its context within a turn-of-the-century shingle style neighborhood, while taking advantage of a south-facing, sloped site. The massing of this 3000 square foot house was visually expanded by breaking up the fenestration into two foot-wide panes and capping the whole with a dominant roof.
To
maximize the solar benefits of the site, all public rooms and bedrooms have
southern exposure and generous windows. Service rooms with small windows provide
a buffer along the northern facade. The children's bedrooms are located on
a lower floor, in a bermed walkout basement.
Further
energy efficiency is gained by using casement and awning windows, Low E glass,
5 1/2" of batt and 1" of rigid wall insulation, 2" of exterior
foundation insulation, and an open interior plan to facilitate the circulation
of solar gain throughout the house. Hot air from the peak of the house is
returned directly to the furnace for redistribution. The air can be recirculated
without reheating if the temperature is high enough.
This home was featured in Design Times, 1995.
