This 1855 mixed use building needed a complete renovation, and had to be brought up to code, including providing accessible access to the first floor retail area and to the apartment above. The building could not be expanded.
The storefront abutted an old shed, which was replaced with a post and beam addition, housing an accessible ramp up to the store level. A section of the roof is flat, creating a private balcony for the apartment with access to an exterior covered staircase and to provide a space to conceal air conditioning equipment.
